What Is Mandatory Biometric Update (MBU)?

Mandatory Biometric Update (MBU) is the process of updating a child’s biometric information in their Aadhaar records as they grow. Under UIDAI guidelines, biometric information must be updated when a child reaches:

5Y
First Mandatory Biometric Update (MBU-1)

Milestone 1 · Age 5 Years

When a child turns 5 years old, their childhood biometrics (which were either not captured or captured in infancy with only photograph & parent biometric linking) must be updated with full biometrics for the first time.

Biometric Data Captured:
@ 10 Fingerprints (All 10 fingers scanned)
@ Both Iris Scans (Left & Right eye scans)
@ Recent Live Facial Photograph

Academic & Legal Significance:
Essential for Primary School Admission, APAAR / ABC ID creation, Saral Portal entry, and Child Aadhaar authentication without failure.

@ UIDAI Policy: FREE of Cost

15Y
Second Mandatory Biometric Update (MBU-2)

Milestone 2 · Age 15 Years

As a child reaches adolescence and transitions into higher secondary education, hand growth and facial changes require the second and final mandatory biometric refresh to match adult biometric characteristics.

Biometric Data Captured:
@ 10 Fingerprints (High-resolution biometric re-capture)
@ Both Iris Scans (Dual eye scanner verification)
@ Updated Full-Face Digital Photographtral India

Academic & Legal Significance:
Critical for 10th / 12th Board Exam hall tickets, JEE / NEET / MHT-CET / CUET competitive exam registrations, National Scholarship Portal (NSP), and bank account DBT linkage.

@ UIDAI Policy: FREE of Cost

Key UIDAI Regulation Note: The update includes fingerprints, iris scans, and a photograph. The child’s existing 12-digit Aadhaar number remains unchanged.
